Castroneves adds goal as he chases record-tying 4th Indy win

May 19, 2019

INDIANAPOLIS — When Helio Castroneves left Indianapolis last May, he pleaded with Roger Penske for one more chance at a record-tying fourth Indianapolis 500 win. Now that Castroneves is back in town and Penske has assured the exuberant Brazilian racer of making at least two more Indy starts, Castroneves has adjusted his goal. "I want to win (this year) because winning gives me an opportunity to go for five next year and I know I'm capable of it," he said. "Racing is still my passion, racing is still my love and hopefully I can break the record." While time may...

NTSB: Autopilot was in use before Tesla hit semitrailer

May 19, 2019

DETROIT — A Tesla Model S involved in a fatal crash with a semitrailer in Florida March 1 was operating on the company's semi-autonomous Autopilot system, federal investigators have determined. The car drove beneath the trailer, killing the driver, in a crash that is strikingly similar to one that happened on the other side of Florida in 2016 that also involved use of Autopilot. In both cases, neither the driver nor the Autopilot system stopped for the trailers, and the roofs of the cars were sheared off. The crash, which remains under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board and...

The Latest: Penske expects Castroneves back at Indy in 2020

May 19, 2019

INDIANAPOLIS — The Latest on Indianapolis 500 practice (all times local): 6:25 p.m. Roger Penske expects Helio Castroneves to race in next year's Indianapolis 500. The most successful IndyCar team owner in history told The Associated Press on Wednesday that when the three-time race winner made the full-time switch to sports cars last year, he made a three-year commitment to bring the Brazilian back to Indianapolis for a chance at a record-tying fourth win. Castroneves won the 500 in 2001, 2002 and 2009. He also finished second in 2003, 2014 and 2017 and was third in 2007. The 44-year-old Castroneves...

Self-driving vehicle pulled over by curious police officer

May 19, 2019

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — A self-driving shuttle got pulled over by police on its first day carrying passengers on a new Rhode Island route. Providence Police Chief Hugh Clements said an officer pulled over the odd-looking autonomous vehicle because he had never seen one before. "It looked like an oversize golf cart," Clements said. The vehicle, operated by Michigan-based May Mobility, was dropping off passengers Wednesday morning at Providence's Olneyville Square when a police cruiser arrived with blinking lights and a siren. It was just hours after the public launch of a state-funded pilot for a shuttle service called "Little Roady."...

7-time champ Johnson growing impatient with winless streak

May 19, 2019

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Jimmie Johnson views himself as a patient person. But mired in a brutal winless streak, the seven-time NASCAR champion is putting all options on the table when his contract is up next year. "I'll have to evaluate what I'll want to do after that," he said. Johnson is growing more and more impatient with each passing week as his Hendrick Motorsports No. 48 race team keeps struggling on the track. "Over my career, I've been able to be patient and let things work themselves out," Johnson said this week. "There are two factors that are leading to...
