Most big cities across America continue to experience a strong seller’s market, with scant inventory of homes, and prices increasing at unprecedented rates of 8 to 10% per year. These escalating housing prices making affordable housing difficult for the average first time home buyer.

Skyfor, a Colorado based buyers agent finder and consumer education service released a report on the cities and states where buyers were able to find homes to purchase under $200,000 in 2017. The list also shows purchases in other cities in higher price ranges to over $1 million located as one might expect in California and Massachusetts.

Many of the homes that buyers found under $100,00 were in the Midwest and the South, but one lucky buyer was able to locate a property in Seneca Falls, New York with the diligent efforts of their buyers agent. Fort Wayne, Indiana and Tusa OK also made the list for having a livable property to purchase under $100,000

In the $100-150,000 range, buyers found properties in Texas and South Carolina. Texas again led the way for the most likely place to find a home under $200,00, with buyers purchasing in Hurst Texas and Keller Texas. Other cities and states where buyers found affordable housing were Lynchburg, Virginia, Dudley, Massachusetts, Saint Joseph Michigan, and Charleston, South Carolina. The Florida purchases were in towns that many consider to be more expensive places to buy, including Saint Petersburg, and Melbourne, FL.

Colorado is becoming a less affordable place with each passing month, but last year home buyers found some deals under $200,000 in Fort Collins and Colorado Springs. Prices have increased 8% to 10% for the past four years in the Denver metro area, and the median price of Boulder homes now hovers near $1M for this quaint university town.

Higher prices continue to be paid for housing in Boston Massachusetts, so many people are flocking to the smaller Western Massachusetts towns around Springfield and Andover. California continues to be a state of high priced homes with most purchasers in this study paying over $500,000 for a single family residence.
