Vinyl Art has published the second in an ongoing series of case studies that reflect its 40-year history of creating vinyl and plastic products for a wide variety of customers.
The latest case study recounts working with a publisher who specialized in university medical textbooks. Medical students are required to buy them, and some college textbooks can cost up to $300 each.
Before the inclusion of digital interactive content available online, publishers struggled to find ways to add value to these textbooks. New and updated editions were usually published annually, which means the books had little resale value.
Vinyl Art recalls how working with a client in the early 1990s gave them a memorable opportunity to demonstrate their flexibility and speed in accommodation. The client, a medical textbook publisher, was left high and dry when another vendor contracted to provide bookmarks for the textbook abruptly went out of business.
In less than 48 hours, Vinyl Art was able to repurpose an element of the plastic dust jacket and transform it into a matching bookmark. Tim Hitchings, now the company’s vice president, remembers watching the uniquely shaped vinyl bookmarks emerging from the company’s production machinery. “We’ll help a client make lemonade out of lemons, but this was the first time we found ourselves stamping out hypodermic-shaped bookmarks,” he said. “Those little vinyl hypodermics made perfect sense.”
Hitchens and his staff have assembled a collection of interesting anecdotes about products created for clients during Vinyl Art’s 40 years in business. They plan to release them throughout 2018 to help celebrate the company’s 40th anniversary.
The four decades of operation have generated over 5,000 dies which Vinyl Art can repurpose to help clients create flexible packaging and loose-leaf products. “Many of these dies have a story attached to them,” Hitchens says, “but this particular one certainly ranks up there in terms of demonstrating our ability to inject creativity into helping a client when things didn’t go as planned.”
